As toddlers, we picked them up with they fell, brushed away their tears and set them back on their feet, cringing each and every time they stumbled. As they get older we bandaged their scrapes and rushed them to emergency rooms, reminding them they superheroes only exist on television and that they cannot really fly.

As teenagers, we worried every time they left on a date or took the car for a drive. We held them as they cried because some boy or girl broke their hearts. Our shoulders as mother have to be large enough to shoulder the burdens of our children and our hearts have to be tender and hard at the same time.
